Civic Engagement Effort Launches In Maryland

FOR RELEASE March 24, 2015
Media Contact: Sterling Crockett, scrockett@ourvoicesmattermd.org

Our Voices Matter Maryland, Inc. unveiled its website today: https://ourvoicesmattermd.org. The homepage features a 1:15 video that describes the new organization’s mission to develop leaders who will inspire civic engagement in underrepresented communities. Our Voices Matter Maryland will initially focus its efforts in Montgomery County.

Board president, Will Jawando said the genesis for the new organization came from his experience as a candidate for state delegate in 2014. “In far too many neighborhoods, I spoke with residents who felt their voices didn’t matter that things happened to them instead of with them. OVM seeks to change that belief.” He added “Our state is great because of its people. The more people who engage in the social and civic fabric of their community, the better our communities will be.”

Executive Director Sterling Crockett said, “Our plan is to recruit and train organizers in underserved communities, who will lead efforts to identify issues impacting their communities and work with them toward solutions.” He added, “Positive civic participation empowers the community and provides residents with an increased sense of selfworth, especially young people.”

Toni Walker, a high school student intern featured in the video said: “Will and Sterling have been networking with other organizations because we’ll be so much more effective working together.” She added, “In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll begin knocking on doors and talking to residents about what issues are important to them and encouraging them to participate in our upcoming community forums.”

Upcoming events include a meet and greet on April 14th and a community forum on May 2nd. Details will be posted on the website and social media accounts.
