Pants on Fire, Andy Harris

Exchange between Washington DC resident Adam Eidinger and Rep. Andy Harris during a town hall meeting on January 20th in Bel Air, MD:

Harris: Adam, we have a Constitution. D.C. is not a state. We can make it a state if we get enough votes nationally, but it’s not a state.

Eidinger: Why won’t you help us do that?

Harris: Because I don’t think it ought to be a state. Because they make irresponsible decisions, like legalizing marijuana when the African-American unemployment rate is 40 percent and the African American graduation rate from high school is 12 percent.

Pants on Fire, Mr. Harris — not even close!

The actual unemployment rate for black District residents is 13.6 percent, according to the Economic Policy Institute, and the high school graduation rate for black students in D.C. is 59.7 percent, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

This is why we need increased civic engagement — because we can’t let people like Rep. Harris get away with such irresponsible comments.
